The Chennai Lounge - the newest Indian restaurant in Southampton - opened its doors to diners in April 2024.

Owners Kannan and Masila Rath are aiming to offer a taste of classical Indian cooking, showcasing the vibrant flavours of South India, having noticed that the majority of Southampton’s Indian restaurants were actually run by people from Bangladesh, with Bangladeshi chefs.

This philosophy of putting a spotlight on South Indian cuisine is reflected in the menu across a variety of the dishes on offer, such as the Usilampatti Lamb Curry (a slow-cooked black pepper based lamb dish from rural Madurai), the Meen Moilee (a Kerala-style curry made of fish stewed in coconut milk infused with ginger and aromatic spices), and the Kathrika Kuzhambu (a South-Indian style preparation of baby aubergine).

Beyond a wide selection of other traditional favourite dishes such as Tandoor Specials and Biryanis, The Chennai Lounge also features some iconic street food options such as a selection of Chaat and iconic South Indian Dosa - all served in a setting adorned with a treasure trove of Indian art and artefacts including traditional heritage Tanjore paintings, and paintings of temple doors from South India.

Speaking about the opening with the Southern Daily Echo, owner Kannan said “We’re opening by accident if anything and its quite scary, we came through the area to visit Osborne House on the Isle of Wight with the famous story of Queen Victoria who fell in love with the Indian cooking of Abdul Karim. "

"Our goal is to present the classical Indian cooking loved by Queen Victoria, who ate chicken and lentil currys every day for 13 years. The recipes and dishes we’re cooking are passed down from our grandparents, to parents and from us to the people of Southampton
